Definition:
Hydrocelectomy is a surgical procedure that is done to remove a hydrocele. The hydrocele is formed by accrual of peritoneal fluid in the membrane known as tunica vaginalis covering front and sides of male testes. They arise because of faulty amalgamation of tissue fluid or soreness of the membrane, which leads to excess production of fluid. Apart from this, the fluid might also get filled up in small portion of epididymis.
In order to treat the hydrocele, the surgeon will make an incision in the scotrum. Then, the hydrocele is cut and the infected tissues are removed inside it. The hydrocele is drained out with the help of a tube. In case of complicated hydrocele (hernia), the cut is made in groin area. This treats hernia as well as the problem of hydrocele. The entire treatment of Hydrocelectomy is done under the general anesthesia. Hydrocele, usually, occurs on one side of the testes and is not much painful.
Purpose:
The purpose of performing Hydrocelectomy is to correct a hydrocele and prevent its return. Though hydrocele is not much painful; still, it causes little pain. It is a soft swelling in the membrane contiguous testes. Some times, hydroceles may also occur after injuries and infections. It is done on children and adults over 40 years of age.
Precautions:
Usually, Hydrocelectomy does not require any precaution as it is performed on out-patient basis. Still, you can take care of not putting pressure on the operated area. This will help you to avoid necessary bleeding and pain.
Pre and Post Care:
Before starting the procedure, the doctor starts with diagnosis of the patient’s medical history. It will include examination of recent injury, illness and even sexual history. Your physician will explain you about the surgery and the need to use temporary drain system. The main idea of placing drain pipe is to avoid infection after the surgery.
After the surgery is carried out, the patient is taken to the recovery room for monitoring blood pressure and body temperature. The doctor will also check for undue bleeding from the surgical area and give pain relieving or related medications.
Risk Factors:
Hydrocelectomy is, usually, a safe procedure with very less risks. Some of them are:
- Injury to spermatic vessel
- Bleeding from incision area
- Sometimes internal bleeding may also occur
Hospital Stay:
On completion of the Hydrocelectomy surgery, you or your child may e required to stay in hospital for 1 to 6 days, depending on the recovery.
