Pyeloplasty
Definition:

Pyeloplasty is the surgical reformation or revision of renal pelvis to deplete and decompress the kidney. Generally, it is performed to treat an uretero-pelvic junction, obstacle if remaining renal function is proper. This operation, known as a Pyeloplasty, enables fast and easy drainage of urine formed by the kidney and relieves the risk of infection. The success rate of Pyeloplasty is 90 to 95 percent, which ensures the safety of treatment.

The surgical process is carried out by making an incision at or below the rib. Then, the kidney is approached through this incision and infected part of uretropelvic junction (UPJ) is removed. After this, the renal pelvis is brought back together with urethra to improve the flow of urine.

Purpose:

The main purpose of carrying out this surgical procedure is to increase the caliber of plyelouretral union. It means that the treatment is done to remove the blockage and improve the urine passage, so that kidney may not stop functioning.

Precautions:

The patient is asked not to have bath till a scab is formed on the incision area. You will be asked to stay away from strenuous exercises and lifting heavy objects. In fact, you will be told before handedly about contacting you general practitioner in times of having fever and pain in the bladder. Another thing to refrain from is the sexual activity for 5 to 6 weeks.

Pre and Post Care:

When you are admitted to the hospital for pyeloplasty, you will first receive consultation session from the nurse explaining the complete surgery. Then, you will have to undergo certain tests, such as blood test and chest x-ray. Certain amount of blood will be taken, which may be used in times of blood transfusion. Your doctor will ask you to stop taking any other medication few weeks before the surgery. Another thing to keep in mind is that you should not drink or eat anything 8 to 10 hours before the surgery.

After the surgery is complete, your doctor will ask to drink lots of fluid. Pain relieving medications are given, in case the patient experience extreme pain in the operated area. You will be asked to do breathing and leg exercises to increase the blood flow in the legs. A catheter might be inserted for passing urine, until the wound heals.

Risk Factors:

The risk factors involved after the surgical procedure of pyeloplasty are:
  • Haemorrhage of any area of urinary system
  • Lesions of neighboring area
  • Urinary tract Infection
  • Bleeding from the wound
  • Opening of wound requiring another surgery
  • Leakage in the joint in ureter
Hospital Stay:

In order to undergo the treatment and surgery of pyeloplasty, you will be required to stay in the hospital for 2 to 5 days. Usually, the time taken for operation is around two to three hours and it takes 4 weeks to 3 months for complete recovery.
